Today's Reading
Hos. 11:1-4, 8e-9

Here Hosea portrays God not as Lord who threatens and punishes, but rather as affectionate Father, reaching out in love to His child. This passage is one of deep tenderness and poignancy, one of the most engaging sections of the Old Testament.

The father loves the child and teaches him to walk. The teaching is not that of a trainer of animals working with ropes and reins, but as a parent who works in encouragement and affection, “like one who raises an infant to his cheeks.”

Even if the child resists the father’s affection, the father cannot bring himself to reject the child in the end. He is God and will not let His child be destroyed.

Do I see God as an affectionate Father?
