Today's Reading
Isaiah 6:1-8

Now the Lectionary gives us six readings from Isaiah. This seems like a rather meager selection. However, there are some sixty-eight Isaiah readings in all in the Lectionary, and what we have here is an introduction. The other readings are scattered throughout the liturgical year, especially in Advent.

Isaiah of Jerusalem lived in the southern kingdom and was a contemporary of Amos and Hosea. He was a national figure in the political life of Judah and is considered a poet of genius.

Our Book of Isaiah seems to be the work of more than one author, however, spread over centuries.

Today’s reading gives us an account of the vocation of Isaiah. God’s angels call for someone to serve as God’s messenger. Isaiah answers, “Send me!”
