Today's Reading
1 Pt. 1:3-9

We have been reflecting on the responsorial psalms for the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent and Eastertide. Now we return to Ordinary Time, specifically to the liturgical first readings for Ordinary Time that were not called for in last year’s calendar. We begin with the first letter of Saint Peter.

The First Letter of Peter is an exhortation written to mostly Gentile Christians by St. Peter or by a representative or secretary of his. It seems to address not a situation of official persecution but the difficulty of living the Christian life in a hostile, secular environment that espoused different values and subjected the Christian minority to ridicule and oppression.

The addressees of First Peter were in a situation not totally different from our own.
