Today's Reading
2 Chronicles 24:17-25

Today’s reading is the only weekday reading in the Lectionary taken from the books of Chronicles. These two books recount certain aspects of the history of God’s people with special emphasis on prayer and devotion rather than on political achievement.

Our reading exemplifies the unfaithfulness of God's people.

Jehoiada was the high priest of the Jerusalem temple. He managed to recall the southern kingdom to obedience to God, but when he died the nobles of the southern kingdom relapsed into idolatry and killed Jehoiada’s son, Zechariah, when he tried to recall them to faithfulness to God’s service.

God punished the northern kingdom by allowing it to be attacked and despoiled by the Arameans.

It was the beginning of the end for the Kingdom of Israel.
