Today's Reading
2 Kings 22:8-13; 23:1-3

Josiah of Judah was a devout king. He did what was pleasing to God in every respect. An important element of his long reign was  religious renewal. The temple was renovated and pagan religious practices suppressed.

In the course of the temple renovation, the priests came across a copy of the book of the Law, previously unknown. This was probably some form of the Book of Deuteronomy. The king and the religious leaders became aware that the book made clear that their whole religious life was in great need of reform and reformation.

Josiah set about a renewal of the covenant. He led the people in a serious and wide spread reform.

Josiah’s reform was the last great burst of religious energy before the end.
